How Many Quail Are On My Property?

Ever wondered how many quail are on your property or if your quail numbers are increasing due to your habitat efforts?  The good news is that where quail are concerned, you can know the answers to those questions!

Each fall, quail managers conduct “fall covey counts” in the early morning hours on properties to count just how many quail coveys are on a property.  The management guidelines for conducting a covey count are located on this website at Publications/Management Guides:

Covey counts are conducted in October or early November and can be accomplished with very little experience.  For best results, plan on conducting your surveys under these conditions:

  • Clear Skies
  • Calm Winds
  • High Barometric Pressure
  • Mid-October to early November
  • 45 Minutes before sunrise

You’ll be able to “count” how many coveys you have on the property by listening for the coveys to call (link the attached sound file to the word call) to each other about 30 minutes before sunrise.  Listen carefully as the calling period may only last for 30 seconds to 2 minutes.  By counting the number of different coveys you hear calling each other, you’ll be able to Count how many quail coveys you have and monitor the results of your habitat efforts.
