The Importance of Winter Cover Food Plots for Pheasants and Quail

As we move into January, many areas of the state have had snow on the ground for several months and have experienced many days of below zero temperatures.  This kind of weather reminds us of the importance of good winter cover for wildlife. Planting a good winter cover food plot, like the one pictured (Nebraska Mix), will not only provide good thermal cover for the birds, but it will also provide much needed food. Further more, putting the cover with the food will decrease predation as birds will not have to travel great distances to find high energy food.  Landowners who plant a quality winter cover food plot will undoubtedly get more pheasants through cold winter weather as opposed to those who don’t provide any winter cover .

You can order and pick up your Nebraska Mix winter cover at the 2010 State Habitat Meeting in Kearney on February 6th.  Also, you will notice that PF is offering a number of new food plot mixes that are available this year.  This is an attempt to offer more specialized mixes for different areas of the state and country.  There should be a mix that will fit your needs to provide the best quality food plot possible.  You can order your food plot mixes through this website, or feel free to contact your local chapter for available PF seed mixes .

You can also pick up any seed order at the State Habitat Meeting and save $2 per acre on your whole order!  To place an order for seed or food plot mixes to be picked up at the State Habitat Meeting please call Mary at 308-428-3062.
