Pheasants Forever Helps Create Wildlife Habitaton Lake Wanahoo
The Lake Wanahoo project is now underway, and PF is helping with the habitat development around the newly constructed Lake.  Since the project kicked off in the spring of 2009, Pheasants Forever has planted around 200 acres of native grass and wildflowers surrounding the lake. Lower Platte, Dodge County and Cornhusker PF chapters have all helped contribute time and equipment to get the seed in the ground.  A big thanks goes out to John Boherer, Stu Ellison, and Bob Lynn for spending time on the tractor helping plan the native mixes.   There is another 100 acres of native grasses and wildflowers scheduled to be planted this fall.

Lake Wanahoo is being built one mile north of Wahoo, on the west side of Highway 109. The dam was built as part of the proposed Highway 77 bypass, which skirts the west and north sides of Wahoo. The four-lane bypass runs across the front face of the dam directly west of the Highway 92 junction.

The dam will create a 637-surface-acre lake, approximately seven times as large as nearby Czechland Lake at Prague. The lake will be situated on1,600 acres of land, and will be open to the public for fishing, hunting, camping, picnicking, day use, and no-wake boating.  The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission is working on an outdoor education center that will be directed towards introducing youth to the outdoors.

The Lake Wanahoo project was made possible by funding from the
Nebraska Environmental Trust, Lower Platte North NRD, City of Wahoo, and Pheasants Forever.
